Taking Vitamin D May Boost Recovery After a Burn Injury, Study Finds

Green Bay burn injury lawyersDespite advancements in treatment over the last 10 years, burn injury victims continue to experience serious and sometimes life-threatening complications, including an infection that may lead to sepsis (and ultimately death). A new study suggests that vitamin D supplementation could be the key to reducing these risks after a burn injury. Learn more about the data from this study, and discover how a seasoned personal injury attorney could help you in your pursuit for full and fair compensation after an accident-related burn injury.

Vitamin D Boosts Recovery for Burn Injury Victims in Study

Vitamin D levels and their impact are often overlooked by clinicians, but the Institute of Inflammation & Aging in Birmingham wanted to find out if it might impact the healing process of burn injury victims. They assessed severely burned patients over the course of a year and reached some interesting conclusions.

They found that vitamin D levels in burn patients tended to be low, in general, but those with the highest levels seemed to have a better prognosis, with better healing, less scarring, and fewer complications. Alternatively, those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had a significantly higher risk of scarring and life-threatening complications. Study authors say that these findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may have potent health benefits for burn injury victims that could potentially enhance antimicrobial activity to prevent infection and promote the healing of burn wounds.

Your Right to Pursue Compensation After a Burn Injury

Although every situation is unique, burn injury victims and their families may be entitled to compensation if they or their loved one was injured in a fault-related accident. Entitlements may include damages for:

  • Past and future pain and suffering,
  • Past and future loss of wages,
  • Scarring and disfigurement,
  • Loss of consortium,
  • Past and future medical-related expenses,
  • Travel costs and other expenses associated with treatment,
  • Past and future losses in earning capacity,
  • Purchases for medical adaptive equipment, and
  • Costs associated with specialized care or treatment.

Victims may experience some or all of these situations over the course of treatment, and some aspects of their care plan may unexpectedly change over time. As such, it is important for victims to have a skilled attorney on their side while pursuing a claim.
