Head, Neck, and Face Injuries in Motorcycles Accidents

Green Bay motorcycle accident attorneys, motorcycle accidents

Any type of motor vehicle accident has the potential to cause serious injuries, and motorcycle accidents are no different. As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 88,000 individuals sustained injuries in motorcycle accidents each year in the United States. Motorcyclists often suffer particularly serious injuries because they do not have the body of a car, seat belts, air bags, or other safety features to help prevent injuries.

In many collisions, a motorcyclist can be thrown off his or her bike and will land on another vehicle, an object, or the pavement. Often, in such situations, a motorcyclist will land face-first, which can cause severe injuries to the face, neck and head. These injuries are particularly common in rear-end collisions or accidents caused by cars turning and cutting in front of the motorcycle.

A motorcyclist who sustains head, neck, or face injuries often faces an extensive recovery period and may even have permanent scars or disfigurement on his or her face. Motorcyclists must often refrain from work or even daily activities during recovery, may not be able to eat normally, and may face serious cognitive challenges as well.

In addition, injuries to the head or face can cause intense physical pain and suffering and emotional distress due to pain, disfigurement or disabilities. Any motorcyclist who sustains this type of injury may be entitled to substantial compensation for these losses from any negligent parties.

Common Injuries

Specific injuries to the upper body that motorcyclists often sustain include the following:

  • Facial and jaw fractures;

  • Shattered or crushed facial or jaw bones;

  • Fractured skull;

  • Severe damage to the teeth;

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs);

  • Spinal cord injuries; and

  • Soft tissue damage in the neck and shoulders.

Any of the above injuries can require costly and extensive medical treatment. Victims may need to have their jaws wired shut, may need reconstructive surgery, may need dental implants, and may be left with significant scarring.

Wearing a proper safety helmet can significantly reduce the number of face and head injuries among motorcyclists, especially helmets with a full face guard. However, concussions and other traumatic injuries may still occur whether or not a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet. Although the direct head impact is reduced, bruising and other damage to the brain can still occur.

Wisconsin law requires only motorcyclists under the age of 18 and those with a learner's permit to wear helmets.. Whether or not you were wearing a helmet does not excuse another party's negligence in causing your accident.
