Appleton car accident attorneysStatistics from the American Heart Association indicate that, on average, someone in the United States dies from a heart attack every 38 seconds. Stroke death statistics are not any better; on average, one person dies from one every four minutes. Car crashes, which are also a leading cause of death in the U.S., have now been linked an increased risk for these conditions in elderly auto accident victims through a study from Boston University School of Medicine.

Auto Accidents May Increase the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke for Elderly

In a comparison study, which examined the risk of heart attack and stroke in elderly auto accident victims and pedestrians, researchers from BUSM found that the risk of heart failure increased during the 30 days and 180 days of follow up. Stroke risks increased around the 180-day follow up period. Data mined from Danish hospitalizations and post-accident follow-ups produced similar findings, which provides even further evidence that the auto accident itself is likely responsible for the increased risk of stroke or heart attack. When paired with the fact that more elderly Americans are maintaining their health, which allows them to drive longer in life than, perhaps, their parents or grandparents, the implications are highly concerning.

Understanding the Importance of the Data for Post-Accident Victims

If you or a loved one have recently been in an auto accident, and you already have a risk for heart attack or stroke, the overall chances of an episode may be significantly higher. Those who do not have a family history or pre-existing condition should also be screened, however, as data suggests that the increased risk for such episodes still remains. Moreover, if you or your loved one are found to have an increased risk of heart attack or stroke during the follow-up period after an auto accident, it is important to speak to your attorney about the situation. While data is preliminary and more studies are needed, this link may entitle you to further compensation in your auto accident claim.
