Defensive Driving and Extra Safety Measures Can Protect Motorcyclists from Accidents

Posted on in Motorcycle Accidents

Wisconsin motorcycle accident lawyersMost motorcycle riders have a story, a moment when they were sure an accident would happen because someone else did not see them. Some have lost their lives because of this phenomenon. Others have had their lives irrevocably altered. Thankfully, there are ways that motorcyclists can reduce their risk of an accident. However, if one does occur because of someone else’s negligence, they may be entitled to compensation. Learn more about the defensive driving and safety measures that could save your life, and what you can do if you or someone you love is injured or killed in a motorcycle accident.

Wear the Right Gear

Although motorcycles can maneuver out of dangerous situations, the rider may still find themselves thrown from their bike. Alternatively, they may be required to “lay the bike down” to avoid a collision. This action, in and of itself, can cause injury – especially if the rider is not wearing the right gear. Always wear long pants and sleeves, preferably made of leather (it does not tear as easily as other fabrics). Also, strive for wearing a helmet whenever you ride. While an insurance company cannot (in most instances) reduce a claim for not wearing one, it could be the one thing that prevents a serious or fatal head injury.

Encourage Visibility

The phenomenon that keeps other drivers from seeing motorcyclists is real, and it is highly psychological. Quite simply, they are not looking for such a small vehicle when checking for oncoming traffic. As a rider, you can increase and encourage visibility, which can reduce your overall chance of experiencing an accident. Strive for bright or reflective clothing, and always ride with your headlight on (even during the day). If necessary (and feasible), honk to be heard.

Attend a Motorcycle Safety Course

Whether you are a new rider or a seasoned one, consider attending a motorcycle safety course. Not only will you learn what to watch out for while on the road, you will learn new defensive driving strategies that could save your life. Just make sure you find one that is offered by a credible source, such as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).

Beware of Intersections

Intersections are notorious for the risks they pose to all motorists, but motorcycle riders are at an especially high risk for injury while crossing through them. In fact, a large percentage of accidents are caused while a motorcyclist is turning left at an intersection, and when other motorists are turning left but do not see the motorcycle and cut into their path. As such, riders are encouraged to practice extra diligence while in them. Watch the wheels of the other vehicles, not the vehicles themselves, to gauge when a car is about to move, and what direction they will be turning. When in doubt, simply stay put.
