Various Types of Birth Control Can Cause Injury

on in Dangerous Products

birth control can cause injury, Wisconsin Products Liability LawyerWomen seeking birth control methods have several different options to choose from, and they often look at the warning of side effects to help make their choice. Unfortunately, some pharmaceutical companies have inadequately warned or even misled users regarding very serious health conditions that may develop as a result of using a birth control product.

Yaz and Yasmin pills

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Bayer advertises birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin as a safe form of birth control that also helps women with symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, many women have claimed in lawsuits that Bayer highly overstated the effectiveness of these pills treating PMDD and that the pills caused the following dangerous side effects:

  • High cholesterol and blood pressure;

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT);

  • Blood clots;

  • Gallbladder disease;

  • Pulmonary embolism;

  • Stroke;

  • Heart attack; and

  • Liver cancer.

The FDA has warned Bayer to include proper warnings on packages and ads for Yaz and Yasmin, as the company was not adequately doing so.

NuvaRing

Manufacturer Merck & Co. touts the NuvaRing for its convenience, as users only have to change the vaginal ring one time a month. However, NuvaRing has been associated in recent years with the following dangerous effects:

  • Chest pain;

  • Heart attack;

  • Blood clots;

  • Stroke;

  • Eye issues;

  • Severe pain in the abdomen; and

  • Death.

Women have claimed that Merck & Co. only warned of the less serious side effects, like headaches or breast tenderness, in order to hide the more serious potential conditions that may develop.

Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Though an IUD is widely considered to be the most effective form of birth control, users of Bayer's IUD product, Mirena, have experienced dangerous side effects and conditions including the following:

  • The device perforating or penetrating the uterine wall;

  • The device migrating through the uterine wall into the abdomen, possibly causing organ damage and requiring surgery to remove;

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID);

  • Vaginal hemorrhage; and

  • Ectopic pregnancies.

All of the above side effects can be painful and may require extensive medical treatment. Moreover, in some women, the use of Mirena has even resulted in infertility. The FDA has stated that Bayer ads for Mirena were misleading regarding possible effects.
